"[The Gatcomb catalog] is second in its line to none in the country."

"What are some of the songs Gatcomb published?" and "Just how many pieces of music did the L.B. Gatcomb Co. publish?" are two of the more common inquiries we receive. While we can name off many of Gatcomb's more popular tunes, we unfortunately don't have a good answer to the second question. The L.B. Gatcomb Co. published numerous pieces of music--several hundred compositions--though a comprehensive list of all publications is, sadly, unavailable. Most (if not all) sales sheets, production numbers, and publishing documents were destroyed by fire in the late 19th century, and precise data is hard to come by. (Add to that the fact that Gatcomb published new arrangements of popular compositions, as well as the subsequent buy-outs of the entire L.B. Gatcomb Co. catalog starting in 1903 that found "Gatcomb pieces" being published under the names Ditson and Jacobs [and possibly others].) That being said, we can still glean plenty of information from surviving printed material.
For instance, on the cover of Latest Gems for Mandolin and Guitar (which featured Luis T. Romero's arrangement of "Sueno De Amor") we are treated to various other titles offered by Gatcomb. And likewise for the cover of "The Darkies' Patrol" which tips us off to other available pieces of sheet music, including the immensely popular "Darkies' Dream."
So let's see if we can't compile a list together. We'll update this page from time to time, and of course we appreciate any and all input from the music historians and banjo enthusiasts out there. (Got a piece of music you want to submit to the Publications page? Send it along and I'll be happy to include it here on the page.)
